Madison is continually recognized as one of the best places to live in the United States. Unfortunately, that has not yet been true for its Black residents. Wisconsin is regularly named the worst state for Black people in the country, and Dane County’s racial disparities are among the state’s most extreme.
The Black community is ready for a renaissance, but needs a place to celebrate our culture and ignite our advancement. With your support, we believe The Center for Black Excellence and Culture will be a critical step in transforming Madison and Dane County.
In addition to welcoming the Black community with space for connections and growth, The Center for Black Excellence and Culture will:
With a special emphasis on teaching Black youth their local, regional, national and world history
By developing and launching business ventures that will benefit our community
In partnership with local businesses, educational institutions and community-based organizations.
Rev. Dr. Alex Gee, a lifelong Madison resident, is pastor of Fountain of Life Church, founder/CEO of the nonprofit Nehemiah Center of Urban Leadership and host of the podcast Black Like Me. In partnership with other faith, business, health, education, community and political leaders, he hopes The Center for Black Excellence and Culture will bring together a collective Black brilliance to affirm, inspire and advance the Black community. Through time and effort, he believes this will also become a national model for empowering the Black community through its own leadership, innovation and resilience.
